Processed Foods and Ingredients

With 30 per cent of the province's total manufacturing sales in 2022, food and beverage processing is the largest manufacturing industry in Manitoba. Food manufacturing sales in Manitoba increased 16.5 per cent compared to the previous year, reaching $7.3 billion in 2022. In 2021, the sector employed 14,965 Manitobans, making it the province's top manufacturing employer. The export of processed food and beverage commodities totaled $4.12 billion in 2022, up 7.4 per cent from the previous year. This accounted for 56 per cent of the total food and beverage manufacturing sales in 2022.

Manitoba has a vibrant food and beverage sector, with 389 manufacturing facilities. Manitoba's three main food-processing sectors are meat product manufacturing, grain and oilseed milling, and dairy product manufacturing. With increasing global demand for healthy, local, organic, and functional foods, Manitoba’s sustainable protein sector has ample opportunities for growth and expansion. There is excellent potential for Manitoba to lead North America in terms of protein-focused industry growth.
