Research and Innovation

Manitoba Agriculture invests in research to accelerate sustainable growth in the agriculture and agri-processing sector through innovation such as new practices, new products and new knowledge.

Investments in research are made through project funding opportunities and operating grants.

Project Funding Opportunities

Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable CAP)

Sustainable CAP, a federal-provincial initiative, provides grant funding for researcher and industry-led projects that contribute to the development of agricultural knowledge and skills and improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Manitoba’s agriculture, agri-food and agri-product sectors.

Agriculture Innovation Hub (AIH)

The provincially funded Agriculture Innovation Hub provides $3 million/year to build greater collaboration between the department, academia and industry. Expanding Manitoba's role in agriculture research and innovation will provide long-term sustainable economic growth in the areas of crop production and sustainable protein production. The AIH will be used to fund research projects related to:
  • crop breeding, production and handling technologies and practices to increase productivity and reduce production risk
  • grain utilization innovations that increase the value and expand demand for Manitoba
  • sustainable protein innovation (including crop-livestock integration)
  • federal government research institution projects
  • advancing the Manitoba Protein Research Strategy by funding the Strategic Research Chair in Sustainable Protein
  • advancing the potato strategy
